What Building Owners and Managers need to know.

Join us to learn about Environmental Approvals & Reporting obligations for Commercial, Retail and Multi-Residential Facilities operating in Ontario.

MOE Regulations:

The Ontario Ministry of Environment recently introduced and amended a series of regulations to allow for the modernization of its current approvals process.

The old Certificate of Approval (CofA) process has been replaced by a new two-path process: Environmental Compliance Approval (ECA) and Environmental Activity & Sector Registry (EASR).

One benefit to building owners and property managers is that low risk equipment including comfort heating and standby power can now be registered on-line and cooling towers may soon be eligible.

All facilities that have existing CofAs will be required to register by October 31, 2016 or sooner if changes are made to the building HVAC or emergency power equipment.

Annual Environmental Reporting Programs:

In addition to environmental approvals, there are a variety of annual environmental reporting programs required by all levels of government.

The National Pollutant Release Inventory (NPRI) is a federal initiative administered by Environment Canada.

O.Reg.127/01 is governed by the Ontario Ministry of Environment.

Both are mandatory reporting programs that require facilities that meet certain criteria to report on their releases of specified substances.

ChemTRAC: For facilities operating within the City of Toronto there is ChemTRAC. ChemTRAC is a new environmental reporting program launched under the City of Toronto’s Environmental Reporting, Disclosure, and Innovation bylaw that requires annual reporting of pollutants if certain thresholds are met. Although the general structure of the program is similar to the federal and provincial programs, reporting thresholds are by design very low to capture smaller to large facilities.
