Carbon Footprinting at the Responsible Travel and Tourism Forum

Carbon footprints, greenhouse gas (GHG) inventories, environmental sustainability, offsetting, carbon markets, verification and validation; it’s not just a new vocabulary; it is a new way of doing business in many sectors of the Canadian travel and tourism industry.

A carbon footprint is the starting point in many carbon management strategies. It will provide your organization with an understanding of how much GHG emissions are released under the business as usual scenario and will highlight areas with the greatest potential for GHG reductions in your business processes. If you would like to demonstrate your commitment towards carbon neutrality by hosting a zero GHG emitting event, or by becoming a carbon neutral organization, the first step is to measure your impact on climate change.

For two years running, Pinchin Environmental has provided a carbon footprint assessment for the Responsible Travel and Tourism Forum (RTTF). GHG emissions have been assessed from direct and indirect sources arising from the event activities including;

  • fuel for heating
  • electricity use
  • travel and accommodation of organizers
  • delegates, speakers
  • emissions associated with disposal of waste products

Once the total amount of GHG emissions are quantified in the carbon footprint assessment, an equal amount of carbon offsets are purchased, making RTTF a CarbonNeutral™ event.

We are also donating a carbon footprint assessment to one lucky winner.  The assessment is for the carbon footprint of one office, and includes Scope 1(direct) and Scope 2(indirect) emissions, and benchmarking.
