HMIS-Online
HMIS-Online Database Survey SystemHMIS-Online is a detailed, accurate, proven and reliable database survey system for tracking asbestos and other hazardous materials in your building.
HMIS-Online features the unique ability of allowing the user to simply click on any area of a building plan and view a list of all hazardous materials in that area allowing clients to independently reassess the hazardous material used in the construction of their buildings.
Unlike paper copies or simple data base programs, this will be the last asbestos or hazarous material survey you will ever need. Updates and tracking of abatement is readily performed in house by your staff or any consultant.

Asbestos Surveys
To assist the property owner or manager in the safe handling and control of the ACM (asbestos containing materials), as required by most provincial regulations, HMIS-Online provides information in a manner that cannot be matched by ordinary database or spreadsheet software packages. In addition, HMIS generates priority lists detailing remedial abatement that can be modified to suit local regulations and client needs or preferences.
Literally, millions of square feet of buildings and industrial plant surveys are now managed in this system.
Ontario Regulation 278/05 requires extensive sampling and recording of non-friable Asbestos-Containing Materials (ACM) in advance of any disturbance of the materials by renovation or maintenance work. This record requires that all asbestos-suspect materials be tested, identified as friable or non-friable and that its location be identified. These products have to be re-assessed at least annually from then onwards.
Although the new survey requirements of O. Reg. 278/05 caused major costs to building owners, the use of the Pinchin web-based HMIS-Online system provides a complete, user-friendly and easily updated survey method which will permanently solve your problems of tracking and managing ACM.

| Structure | Ceiling | Ducts | Other |
Systems are then broken down by component and asbestos (or potentially asbestos) material. For each material and component, further information is collected.

| Condition | Visibility | Friability |
Accessing and Updating Asbestos Information
Three levels of user security:
- Administrator – Overall control over system. Ability to add other users, and update asbestos information
- User – Most users have this level of access. Able to view all buildings and update asbestos information
- View Only – lowest level of security. View only users can only see or print asbestos information for buildings that the Administrator has given them rights to see.

Background
Pinchin Environmental Ltd. developed the original Hazardous Material Inventory System (HMIS) in the early 1990’s to meet the needs of building owners and managers faced with serious and difficult new requirements for asbestos surveys and managment under Ontario Regulation 278/05.
HMIS-ONLINE was created in 2004 to make the program accessible to our clients over the internet. It has been used for surveys of many tens of millions of square feet of building space over the last 15 years and is currently used in house by many clients.
Ontario Regulation 278/05 (Designated Substance – Asbestos in Construction and in Buildings and Repair Operations) became effective on November 1, 2005. The new requirements include:
- increased sampling frequency,
- room-by-room data collection,
- identification of the specific location condition,
- friability of asbestos-containing material (ACM) or assumed ACM.
These requirements meet or exceed the record keeping requirement of all Canadian and U.S. Jurisdictions.
