Mould contamination is now recognized as a potential cause of a range of adverse health effects in general use buildings such as offices, schools or homes. Authorities at all levels require assessment and remediation of potential mould growth and appropriate precautions to protect remediation workers and building occupants.
Building owners and employers are required to survey for mould if a concern is noted, and to remove the mould growth using appropriate methods. This issue presents a significant liability risk to building owners and operators, contractors and insurance professionals.
The hazard of mould contamination in buildings has emerged as one of the most prominent public health issues of the late 1990’s. From leaky condominiums in British Columbia to flooded homes in Manitoba and mouldy schools in Newfoundland, what was once treated as a nuisance, many occupants now consider a risk to their health.
Recent expert panel reviews have confirmed the association between mould growth in the indoor environment and adverse health effects. Several public buildings, including hospitals and health care facilities, have recently been shut down on discovery of mould. For all these reasons, those responsible for safety in buildings, must be ready to meet the challenges of this issue. The course has been designed for:
