Engineering Environmental and
Health & Safety Solutions

Pinchin Environmental Ltd., part of the Pinchin Group of Companies, is dedicated to being Canada’s leading environmental consulting company. As one of the largest and most respected environmental safety companies, Pinchin employs skilled and experienced environmental engineers, scientists, technologists, project managers and support staff to offer our clients solution-focused services and training.

Over 400 people based in 28 offices across Canada work in multi-disciplinary teams, targeting areas such as environmental science—including climate change expertise—hazardous materials management, occupational health and safety, risk management and financial due diligence.

What makes us different from other environmental consulting firms?

Driven by the forward-thinking vision of founder, Dr. Don Pinchin, we invest time, energy and resources into listening to and understanding customers’ goals and challenges. It may be a cliché, but we really do focus on establishing solid relationships with clients.

We recognize that we work in an increasingly complex field where it’s important to be responsive, creative and always on top of rapidly changing trends, regulations and data.

We know that our customers require us to be on the ground where they do business, which is why we draw from our large national and regional network that knows our industry from St. John’s to Yellowknife to Victoria—and beyond.

We understand that our customers are focused on successfully managing their own businesses, counting on us for trusted, cost-efficient and effective guidance and service in the business we know best.

Our Areas of Expertise:

As Canada's largest hazardous materials consulting firm, having inspected over 5,000 projects ranging in abatement cost from $5,000 to $15 million, the Hazardous Materials (Asbestos, Mould, Lead) group provides a well designed tender package to give the abatement contractor a clear understanding of their role and the client's expectations. Surveys are provided for the preparation of specifications, property transfer valuation and regulatory compliance, or on a computerized database for long term asbestos management.

The Indoor Air Quality and Microbial Contamination group investigates and evaluates indoor air quality (IAQ) in non-industrial workplaces such as offices, schools and hospitals. This includes the presence of microbial contamination (fungi or bacteria) which also represents a health hazard to occupants of the building, or to construction workers during renovation or demolition. IAQ surveys include the identification, evaluation and control of potential indoor sources of contaminants.

The Environmental Due Diligence and Remediation group focuses on the identification of environmental conditions that may result either directly or indirectly, in unacceptable environmental or financial risk, and on the development of ways in which this risk may be managed or remediated.

The Building Science group consists of specialists trained to make recommendations based on visual inspections, diagnostic testing, and monitoring when necessary. They provide overall assessment of the building’s components to provide the Owner with an evaluation of these various components - the foundation essential for well developed, easily managed and economically sound programs for corrective building maintenance.

The Environmental Air & Noise group provides engineering and MOE permitting services that focus on responsible discharge and abatement of industrial and commercial air & noise emissions, and control of worker exposure to contaminants through ventilation. Emissions include any chemical, odour or noise discharges to the atmosphere.

The Occupational Health and Safety group, with six Certified Industrial Hygienists/Registered Occupational Hygienists, offers consulting services to assess and manage potential workplace health and safety hazards in industrial, construction and health care sectors. Services include: Health and Safety Program Development and Auditing, Occupational Hygiene Surveys, and Health and Safety Training.

The Climate Change (GHG) group provides GHG services grounded in a fundamental understanding of engineering principles related to environmental emissions estimation, measurement, and control using a comprehensive knowledge of all major estimation protocols.

The Microbiology Laboratory, one of only four in Canada, and 50 in the world, is fully accredited for bulk, air and surface analysis of moulds by the American Industrial Hygiene Association (AIHA) Environmental Microbiological Laboratory Accreditation Program (EMLAP) and participates in AIHA Environmental Microbiology Proficiency Analytical Testing (EMPAT) Program (Lab ID# 158835).

The Asbestos Laboratory is one of the very few Canadian laboratories accredited by the US National Institute of Standards and Technology, National Voluntary Laboratory Accreditation Program (NVLAP, Certification # 101270 and the relevant requirements of ISO 9002) for the identification of asbestos in bulk samples. Phase Contrast Microscope (PCM) NIOSH 7400 analysis of airborne fibres by trained analysts is available at all Pinchin offices.

Other Environmental Laboratory Services include environmental dust identification, odour (emissions & environmental testing) and lead analysis.

Training / Courses in Hazardous Materials, Mould and Indoor Air Quality cover an overview and awareness of issues and regulatory requirements, current standards and best practices, remediation procedures and prevention, and maintaining a healthy indoor environment. Seminars are presented at our clients’ facilities or at our Mississauga or Winnipeg training centres.
