Odour Detection & Recognition Analysis


Detection Threshold:

The detection threshold of an odorous sample is determined by diluting the gas sample in question with purified clean air to sub-detection levels.

The diluted gas sample and two odour-free gas samples, called blanks, are then individually presented to a panel of trained assessors who are asked to identify which of the three samples is different.

The concentration of odour in the gas sample is then doubled and re-presented to each of the panelists along with two blank samples.

The process continues with the concentration of odour doubling until statistically 50 per cent of the panelists have correctly identified and recorded a detection response. The odour detection threshold (OTV) represents the number of dilutions required to render a gaseous sample detectable by 50 per cent of a normal population.


Recognition Threshold

The recognition threshold is the point at which 50 per cent of the panelists respond that they detect the odour and can attribute characteristics (i.e., sweet, burnt, pungent, etc.) to the odour sample.
